How to Stake Into Sand?

Sand is very light and has very little resistance to hold stakes into the ground. Proper sand stakes can still be difficult to use, so we will show you how to properly stake down in the sand.

You will want to find a way to weigh down your stakes with rocks or bags of sand. This extra weight will help help the stake into the ground with less movement and help anchor it into the ground stronger.

The key is to put your stake into the ground at an angle the top/head of the stake should be angled away from the tent while the sharp point should be angled towards the tent. When the wind picks up it will pull the stakes towards the tent but when set up at an angle there is more material on top of the stake to better hold in the ground.

From there place extra weight on the head of the stake so it is held down and won’t be pulled up and out of the sand.

Can You Use Normal Tent Pegs in Sand?

No, you can’t use normal tent stakes in the sand. Although most tents come with simple L-shaped stakes they aren’t ideal for the sand. These L shape stakes don’t anchor into the sand very well and will easily move or be pulled out when begging pulled on.

In high winds, these tent stakes won’t work well to hold down your tent. If you rarely camp on the sand you can put rocks on top of the stakes to help them stay in the ground. But if you plan on regularly camping on sand or snow it is recommended to get proper sand pegs.

Orange Screw Ultimate Ground Anchor-

Screw Sand Stake

The Orange Screw Ultimate Ground Anchor is our best overall tent stake for sand. This stake is perfect for sand due to its screw-like design.

This design allows the stake to easily be screwed into the sand or dirt. The large thread of the stake allows sand and dirt to sit on each thread of the stake making it very difficult to pull out even on soft ground.

These stakes only come in a pack of four which isn’t ideal when planning for windy conditions. Since most tents and shelters require more than four stakes you may have to buy multiple packs to properly secure your tent in the sand.

These stakes are made from 100% recycled material and can be recycled once you are done with them. Recycling is a great way to protect the environment and allow us to further enjoy the outdoors!

Triwonder Snow Sand Stakes-

Triwonder Sand Stakes

The Triwonder Snow Sand Stakes have a minimal design making them great for backpacking. These tent stakes are designed for sand and snow making them perfect for anyone planning on camping in the sand!

Due to the long length and U shape of these stakes they are able to hold very well in sand and snow. The U shape allows the stake to properly grab into the sand when they get pulled on. The small holes in the stake allow sand or snow to completely surround the stake giving you a better anchor!

Made from thin aluminum these sand stakes are lightweight yet very bendable. These tent stakes are not built for any type of hard soil or rock as they will easily bend and brake.

Misscat Canopy Weights-

They are easily portable and lightweight as they are empty until you fill them with sand once you are ready to set up!

These are a great solution for anyone is having trouble with tent stakes not holding in sand or other soft soil.

You can simply place these bags on the four counters or tie your guylines to them to replace the stakes.
